Kia recalls 507000 vehicles for safety reasons

Added: 24 July 2018

Vehicle recalls are super hard for any manufacturer. Let’s face it, no one really wants to deal with a situation like this. Recalling tons of vehicles is super problematic from a business standpoint. So you do want to make sure that if something like this does happen, you have all the systems in place to make it work. That’s what Kia is dealing with right now.

Recently they had to recall more than half a million vehicles as they seem to have an electrical issue. That issue is serious because it causes the seatbelt and airbag pretensioners to be disabled during a crash. So the passenger and the driver won’t receive any help, and they will have to deal with the entire force of the impact.

The cars they are recalling include the 2010-2013 Forte Koups and Fortes, Optimas 2011-2013 as well as the 2011-2012 Optima Hybrids and the 2011-2012 Sedonas. These issues seem to be very problematic that they can’t be solved with any type of software intervention. It really requires them to focus on hardware modifications, and that is obviously going to be very costly.

The info came from multiple crashes where the ACU had electrical damage. There were 6 crashes in the US alone that brought in this problem, and it seems to be pretty bad as a whole. There was also a similar incident in Canada. So that shows the issue is not only in the US versions of the car. Since it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where the issues come from, what you want to do is to figure out a way to deal with it.

Kia engineers are working hard to find a solution, but they did have to opt for a recall. The airbag control unit is supplied by ZF-TRW, and these units also brought issues to some FIAT cars recently as well. So it’s safe to say that even the tiniest detail and minor issue can lead to some massive problems, which is why you have to find a way to tackle them correctly, and this seems to be the right one.

You can go to the NHTSA website and add your VIN there. You will see if your vehicle is affected by this problem or not. It’s certainly the type of thing that you will have to deal with if your car was manufactured during the aforementioned years. But you shouldn’t be worried too much. They said that there won’t be a whole lot of stuff to be changed, which does bring quite a lot of hope to those that own these vehicles.

Still, checking whether your car should be in the recall or not is the right thing to do as fast as possible. Kia is trying to solve all the issues as fast as possible, but it can be very hard for them to solve such a massive problem in a short amount of time. Hopefully the issue will get solved quickly!
